The Maine State racecourse of Gorham Raceway was located about a mile from the centre of town, at the junction of Route 112 and Narragansett Street. The 62 acre site was known locally as ‘The Fairgrounds’ and continued to stage harness races until its closure in 1967. Once racing had ceased the site was used for Fairs and local markets until the grandstands and outbuildings were demolished. In 2016 the site was bought for 1.2 million dollars by Moody Collision Company owned by local entrepreneur Shawn Moody, having initially been bought for just over 270,000 dollars by Hannaford in 1990. He had plans to build a superstore on the site, but abandoned those plans, choosing instead to build the store in a different location in the town.
